2016 was supposed to be The Year of Blair's.
January seemed so promising. A milestone year, as each of celebrated "big" birthdays. My one word for 2016 was chosen - Forward - with hopes and dreams of a record year.
Well...it has left it's mark.
For Tim and me, milestone birthdays just meant a big reality check of aging. More on that to come. But for Noah, turning 16 has been filled with changes, opportunity and possibilities. And for that, despite the hiccups that this year has brought, I'm thankful.
We've watched him hop from the nest and soar this year. It's bittersweet as your child grows. I'm proud of his independence but it isn't easy letting go. As he's closer to an adult than a child now, I find myself mentally counting the days he's left to nestle under my wing.
In less than a year, he's become a licensed driver and been accepted to college. How did that even happen?! I'm thrilled he already knows what he wants to do with his life and is so passionate about his future. For that, 2016 has most definitely been a record year for him.
Spring saw me with an extra bounce in my step, not just from the return of warmer weather but also because this 40 year old body moves much better without ice and snow. I welcomed the season with a trip to the mountains with my momma and restoration within my soul.
By summer, with half the year gone, I found myself grabbing hold of joy. Realizing that my focus was slipping, I pondered on what began this little blog and challenged myself to find joy every day. And record each moment. 31 days of Joy.
Perhaps it was because God knew I needed to store it up for the season that was coming.
Tim welcomed 50 with a surprise retreat. Though my dream was that somehow a free cruise or trip to the beach would have landed from the sky and whisked us away to celebrate, I was pretty proud with the mini vacation Noah and I pulled together. It was relaxing and everything that Tim loves.
And it was the respite we needed to prepare us for the storms ahead. Once Tim blew out that big 5-0 it was if someone flipped the switch on his health. My rock began to crumble. Without warning, we found ourselves in the ER for random pains and scares in October and health concerns would continue to be the theme for autumn.
As I write this post, he's off for the week recovering from a foot injury, though there wasn't an accident to cause it. None of his ailments have been serious but they've been enough to shake us. He's struggling with having to be still and not be the doer, providing for our family. For me, it hurts to watch him hurting. I'm worried about his current issues but also stewing on our future. We're so not prepared for aging, or the potential of either of us not working.
It's enough to have me concerned about the forward that it pulled me from the bed at 2 a.m. And I know that isn't at all the purpose God would have for me, when he sent that word twelve months ago.
Through 2016, He's helped me learn to let go. Now I must lean in and trust Him for whatever is to come...

Day 18: Just Joy
Eight years ago today, we were wrapping up an amazing vacation in Florida.
Sunshine and the sea. Family photos on the beach. The perfect ending to a week we'd always remember. When I look back on those smiling faces, I think about how much has changed since then.
While posing for those photos, none of us had any idea that would be our last vacation with Austin. Never would I have imagined that his first trip to Pensacola would be the only one he'd ever take.
None of us really ever knows when our last moment with someone we love will be. And in this broken world we live in, it seems the unimaginable becomes reality day after day.
Time is precious. Life is short and can change in an instant. This we know.
And that can be heavy to carry around.
So can seeing past photos of someone you no longer have in the present. When those memories hit your phone first thing in the morning, one never really knows where it will take them. There was a time that seeing Austin's face would've flooded me with more emotions than I could handle. Perhaps it would have sent me to the floor in tears, cancelled the plans I had for the day, or set a mood across the house I could not shake.
Even now, there's a piece of my heart that twinges. More of it is filled with love of the moment and of seeing his smile, but I think no matter how much time passes a part of you will always hurt and grieve for what was lost.
But I'm grateful that most days joy fills more of me than sorrow.
I'm a little over the halfway point in this 31 day challenge. This afternoon I paused, wondering what exactly to write about. It was just a very ordinary day. There were glimmers of good news, smiles shared, a spontaneous family moment, but for the most part it was just a day. And while it was good, and joy was present, it doesn't give much to write about it. Even for a girl where words come easy.
Yet, as I ponder about that, I realize how very precious it is that I'm in this place. Where joy can just be. The more you chase after joy, the more it settles within you. God puts it there, I have no doubt. And I'm content that nothing extraordinary can happen but joy can still be present. Especially when I was once at a place where I felt joy would never exist again.
There have been a few people on my heart today that I can see joy isn't present. For a girl who is all about sharing joy, it tugs at me and makes me wish I could just grab up some of mine and give it to them. While happiness is contagious, joy is something internal. It has to be wanted to grow. Maybe for some the clouds are so dark they can't see the light that comes with seeking joy. But that is my prayer.
If that is where you are, please know that I have walked on that same scary, dark path. In the place where joy is void. Where even breathing takes effort. Where the pain of grief is physical. Where the weight of no joy feels crushing.
Where even reading about someone finding joy made me angry. Impossible...
Or so it seemed. However, here I am, the one writing about it. On a path where joy is ever-present. Where breathing is a privilege. Where pain is temporary. Where worries are lifted. Where anger is replaced with laughter.
And if I made it through to the other side, you can too. Just seek it. Will it. Pray it back into your life. Joy will return.
When it does a simple, nothins special, regular Monday will feel pretty glorious just because joy was there.

Good News: Great JOY
Have you ever been so excited to share something good that it feels as if you may burst keeping it contained? As if you can just feel the bubbles of joy spilling out from you?
Even the word JOY brings forth a smile, remembrance of past experiences, happy moments...
Are you there this season, friends?
If not, I know...
there was a time not long ago, joy seemed nearly impossible.
As I set out on the journey of blogging through my grief, joy was the furthest thing from my mind. When the whisper of finding joy came to me, it seemed so foreign at the time, but I didn't question it. I knew in the moment it was a God-nudge and he's guided me through it every step of the way.
And this journey has been transforming. Looking back at where I was in 2010 to where I am now, the only explanation I can give someone is that it has been of God. He's the reason for my joy.
In the beginning, I thought it was just about seeking out joy. Staying positive. Finding the good in any situation. Attitude, as they say, is everything. But it didn't take long for me to realize there is no joy without Him.
It is ok to have joy in your life, no matter what you're facing. You are allowed to smile, even laugh.
If you're still needing inspiration, pull up a chair and browse here awhile.
This week of Advent season, my wish for you is that your heart is open to overflowing JOY that God has to share with you...
